Dear friends,

The School Mental Health Initiative committee (SMHI) has presented the following documents to the NC State Board of Education (SBOE) and are scheduled to go before the Board for a vote in April:

The documents show recommendations for the need to have mental health services accessible in all NC public schools and the SMHI committee is asking for your support by sending a note to the SBOE stating you support this initiative.

Here is a sample note you may use, which includes the SMHI mission statement. You can also add to it or write your own:

I am in support of the policy recommendations made by the SMHI in an effort to create a policy and/or legislative changes to ensure that public school students in North Carolina have equitable access to a full continuum of high-quality and well-coordinated mental health services.

Please send all notes in support of the School Mental Health Initiative by April 1, 2017 to Board member, Patricia Willoughby at

The full plan is available on the SBOE website.

Thank you,

The School Mental Health Initiative Committee
